Buy confidently with Xoobie’s 5 safe buying tips

Xoobie’s online marketplace provides buyers with a safe and easy way to buy online. Here are some simple common sense guidelines to help you buy safely.

1. Know what you’re about to buy

It’s as simple as doing your homework before purchasing. Read, the description. Check out all of the photos. If you’re unclear on something, email the seller any questions you may have. Make sure you’re also clear on whether postage is included.

2. Get to know the seller

Read what past buyers have to say about them via the seller’s feedback page. This will give you a good indication of the seller’s reputation online.

3. Choose the safest payment option

PayPal is the recommended method for online payment. Your bank account details or credit card number will not be visible to the seller either, so there is minimal risk of identity theft or fraud.

Credit card payment is also advisable as financial institutions do provide a certain level of buyer protection. Your credit card institution can advise you more about what you’re covered for.

Escrow services allow buyers to approve the goods before the seller is paid. So if the item is not what you wanted, you can get your money refunded by the Escrow service.

Bank deposit is acceptable. This can be done either online or over the teller. If paying by bank deposit, you should only pay into an Australian bank account. Be aware however, that there is no buyer protection offered if the item does not arrive or it is not what you expected.

Money orders, bank cheques and personal cheques are also acceptable however funds are difficult to recuperate in cases of fraud.

Instant cash transfer services such as Western Union and MoneyGram are prohibited on Xoobie as they cannot be traced and can easily lead to fraud. Cash in the mail is also prohibited by Xoobie and not to mention by Australia Post.

If you have reason to believe a particular seller is trying to commit fraud, report them to Xoobie via the following link contact us.

4. Communicate with the seller

Most problems are the result of poor communication or different expectations between the buyer and the seller. There is no substitute for communication.

Ensure you’re clear on how the transaction will take place, including how payment is to be made and how and when you will receive the goods. Also be familiar with the refund and exchange policy. Ensure you are clear on all of this before you bid or purchase a product. If you are not clear on any of these then email the seller.
